League One Predictions for Saturday 22 August 2026

Our League One weekend analysis looks beyond the opening results to identify where performance evidence and current market prices may disagree.

The second Saturday of the 2026/27 EFL League One season features 11 fixtures on 22 August, beginning with Doncaster against Barnsley and Luton against Notts County at 12.30pm.

Sheffield Wednesday and Bradford City play separately on Thursday 20 August and are therefore not included in this Saturday-focused League One predictions article.

The opening results provide some useful evidence, but they also contain dismissals, late goals and scorelines that do not fully reflect the underlying performances. GoalIQAI’s analysis balances those matches against longer-term strength, home advantage, squad changes and the prices available on 17 August 2026.

League One Weekend Market Overview

Leicester, Stockport and Luton are the three shortest-priced favourites. All are the most likely winners of their respective fixtures, but the available odds leave little room for early-season uncertainty.

The more interesting prices appear in closer matches. Bromley are home underdogs despite winning at Barnsley, Huddersfield can be backed at 2.45 after beating Wimbledon with ten men, and Barnsley are available at 3.25 after dominating much of their opening defeat.

The following prices were available through Sky Bet when checked on 17 August. Odds can move, and the probability assessment should be revisited if a quoted price changes materially.

The displayed implied probabilities include a bookmaker margin. GoalIQAI’s explanation of bookmaker margin and fair market probabilities shows why the three percentages in a match-result market normally total more than 100%.

Match of the Day: MK Dons v Huddersfield Town

Huddersfield produced the strongest League One scoreline of the opening round, beating AFC Wimbledon 3–0 despite playing the second half with ten men.

The scoreline was more emphatic than the overall shot difference. Huddersfield and Wimbledon both recorded approximately ten attempts, but the Terriers restricted their opponents to one shot on target and managed the reduced game state effectively.

The opening result also fits a stronger underlying baseline. Huddersfield finished only ninth last season, but their expected-performance data reportedly ranked them much closer to the leading promotion contenders.

MK Dons demonstrated that they can compete at this level by drawing 2–2 at relegated Oxford. They led 2–1 until a stoppage-time equaliser and recorded six shots on target to Oxford’s four.

The market prices both teams at 2.45, implying a 40.8% chance for either side before accounting for the draw and bookmaker margin. GoalIQAI estimates Huddersfield’s win probability at approximately 44%.

  • Selection: Huddersfield Town to win.
  • Current price: 2.45 with Sky Bet when checked.
  • GoalIQAI estimate: approximately 44%.
  • Estimated edge: approximately 3.2 percentage points.
  • Minimum attractive price: approximately 2.30.
  • Confidence: 6/10.
  • Predicted outcome: MK Dons 1–2 Huddersfield.
  • Main risk: MK Dons have assembled a squad with substantial League One experience and were competitive away at Oxford.

Bromley v Cambridge United

Bromley began their first League One campaign with a 1–0 victory at Barnsley. The result required defensive resilience: Barnsley recorded 67% possession, 22 shots and 59 touches in the Bromley penalty area.

The expected-goals difference was much smaller than those territorial figures suggest. Barnsley generated approximately 1.18 xG and Bromley around 1.04, indicating that many of the home side’s attempts were relatively low quality.

Bromley’s case also extends beyond one result. They won League Two after going unbeaten at Hayes Lane, with their direct approach, set pieces and home performance providing a repeatable foundation.

Cambridge returned to League One with a 3–2 win over Wigan. They led 3–0 before conceding twice in four minutes, demonstrating both attacking threat and some vulnerability when the game state changed.

Bromley at 2.50 implies a 40% home-win probability. GoalIQAI estimates the chance closer to 45%, making the hosts the strongest price-based selection on the Saturday card.

  • Selection: Bromley to win.
  • Current price: 2.50 with Sky Bet when checked.
  • GoalIQAI estimate: approximately 45%.
  • Estimated edge: approximately five percentage points.
  • Confidence: 6/10.
  • Predicted outcome: Bromley 2–1 Cambridge.
  • Main risk: Barnsley controlled most of the opening match, while Cambridge demonstrated that they can score at this level.

Doncaster Rovers v Barnsley

Both teams lost 2–1 or 1–0 on the opening weekend, but the performances were more competitive than the points column suggests.

Doncaster’s defeat at Mansfield produced almost identical expected-goals totals of approximately 1.12 and 1.11. Mansfield registered more attempts and touches in the penalty area, but Doncaster remained competitive throughout.

Barnsley dominated their match against Bromley without converting their territorial advantage. Their 22 attempts generated only around 1.18 xG, illustrating that shot volume and shot quality are not interchangeable.

The market makes Doncaster strong favourites at 1.85 and prices Barnsley at 3.25. Longer-term squad expectations place the teams closer together than those odds suggest, even after Barnsley lost several important sources of goals during the summer.

Barnsley’s 3.25 price implies a 30.8% probability. GoalIQAI estimates their win probability at approximately 36%.

  • Selection: Barnsley to win.
  • Current price: 3.25 with Sky Bet when checked.
  • GoalIQAI estimate: approximately 36%.
  • Estimated edge: approximately 5.2 percentage points.
  • Confidence: 5.5/10.
  • Predicted outcome: Doncaster 1–2 Barnsley.
  • Main risk: Barnsley’s lack of high-quality chances against Bromley may reflect a genuine attacking limitation rather than opening-day variance.

Stevenage v Oxford United

Stevenage drew 1–1 at Burton after finding a stoppage-time equaliser. It was a low-event contest in which neither team created many clear opportunities.

Oxford drew 2–2 with MK Dons after relegation from the Championship. Their equaliser also came in stoppage time, but the underlying match was competitive and Oxford retain a core of players with experience above League One.

There are legitimate reasons for Oxford’s price. They entered the season under a new and inexperienced manager, while a temporary transfer restriction complicated their squad development.

Even after those adjustments, odds of 2.88 imply only a 34.8% chance of an away win. GoalIQAI estimates Oxford’s probability at approximately 38%.

  • Selection: Oxford United to win.
  • Current price: 2.88 with Sky Bet when checked.
  • GoalIQAI estimate: approximately 38%.
  • Estimated edge: approximately 3.2 percentage points.
  • Confidence: 5.5/10.
  • Predicted outcome: Stevenage 0–1 Oxford.
  • Main risk: Oxford’s new managerial structure and restricted transfer activity make their true level difficult to establish.

Luton Town v Notts County

Luton recovered from 3–1 down to win 4–3 at Reading, scoring the decisive goal in stoppage time. The comeback demonstrated attacking quality and resilience, but conceding three first-half goals also showed that the title contenders are not yet defensively settled.

Notts County earned a deserved 1–1 draw against Leicester. They had substantially less possession but remained competitive, created enough pressure to equalise and prevented the title favourites from converting their technical control into a comfortable victory.

Luton are correctly favoured and remain the most likely winners. The question is whether their 1.55 price understates the possibility of another uneven performance.

Notts County at 4.75 carry an implied probability of approximately 21.1%. GoalIQAI estimates the promoted side’s chance at approximately 24%.

  • Selection: Notts County to win.
  • Current price: 4.75 with Sky Bet when checked.
  • GoalIQAI estimate: approximately 24%.
  • Estimated edge: approximately 2.9 percentage points.
  • Confidence: 5/10.
  • Classification: higher-variance opportunity.
  • Predicted outcome: Luton 2–1 Notts County.
  • Main risk: Luton’s attacking strength and superior squad depth may overwhelm a promoted team that lost two major goalscorers during the summer.

Other League One Predictions

AFC Wimbledon v Reading

Wimbledon lost 3–0 at Huddersfield and struggled to create clear chances even after gaining a numerical advantage. Reading’s 4–3 defeat to Luton exposed serious defensive problems, but their first-half attacking performance was excellent. Reading are preferred at 2.50, although the uncertainty around both defences keeps the estimated edge below the main shortlist. Predicted outcome: Wimbledon 1–2 Reading.

Leicester City v Burton Albion

Leicester were held to a deserved 1–1 draw by Notts County, while Burton drew 1–1 with Stevenage in a low-quality contest. Leicester remain the likelier winners, but 1.40 requires a success rate above 71% before margin. That is too demanding after an uncertain start. Predicted outcome: Leicester 2–0 Burton.

Peterborough United v Mansfield Town

Peterborough lost 2–0 at Bradford and finished with ten men. Mansfield beat Doncaster 2–1, although the expected-goals totals were almost level. Mansfield’s experience and defensive baseline make them marginally preferable, but an away price of 2.25 already reflects that advantage. Predicted outcome: 1–1.

Stockport County v Blackpool

Stockport delivered an impressive 3–1 victory at Plymouth, while Blackpool drew 1–1 with Wycombe. Stockport deserve to be strong favourites, but their 1.53 price leaves little protection against transition under a new manager. Predicted outcome: Stockport 2–1 Blackpool.

Wigan Athletic v Leyton Orient

Wigan conceded three times at promoted Cambridge before recovering to 3–2. Orient’s 2–1 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday included a damaging period of individual defensive errors, but their performance outside that spell was more competitive. Orient are interesting at 3.00, although the evidence is insufficient for a formal selection. Predicted outcome: 1–1.

Wycombe Wanderers v Plymouth Argyle

Wycombe drew at Blackpool, while Plymouth’s highly regarded side lost 3–1 at home to Stockport. Plymouth’s longer-term strength makes 2.50 potentially attractive, but the departures of important goalscorers and the weakness of their opening display create too much uncertainty. Predicted outcome: 1–1.

Best-Supported Value Opportunities

Classification Selection Odds Implied Estimate Confidence
Best-supported value Bromley to win 2.50 40.0% 45% 6/10
Secondary value Barnsley to win 3.25 30.8% 36% 5.5/10
Secondary value Huddersfield to win 2.45 40.8% 44% 6/10
Secondary value Oxford to win 2.88 34.8% 38% 5.5/10
Higher-variance opportunity Notts County to win 4.75 21.1% 24% 5/10

No accumulator is recommended. The individual probability differences are modest and based on only one current-season match. Combining the selections would increase variance without improving the quality of the underlying evidence.

Markets and Matches to Avoid

Leicester at 1.40: Leicester remain the strongest team in the division on squad quality, but their draw at Notts County showed that technical superiority may not immediately translate into dominant results.

Stockport at 1.53: the opening victory was impressive, but the price already incorporates a very strong home expectation and leaves little margin for transition under a new manager.

Luton at 1.55: Luton demonstrated attacking depth at Reading but also conceded three goals in the opening half. They are likely winners without being a compelling short-priced selection.

Mansfield at 2.25: Mansfield won their opener, but the chance-quality difference against Doncaster was negligible. The away price at Peterborough offers limited compensation for the tactical uncertainty.

Risks and Uncertainties

  • Small samples: no team has completed more than one league match.
  • Scoreline distortion: Huddersfield’s 3–0 victory and Luton’s 4–3 win both contained unusual game states.
  • Promoted teams: Bromley, Cambridge, MK Dons and Notts County are still establishing how their previous strengths translate to League One.
  • Relegated teams: Leicester, Luton, Oxford and Plymouth may require time to stabilise after substantial change.
  • Transfer-window uncertainty: important players can still leave or arrive before the weekend.
  • Team news: confirmed starting line-ups were unavailable at the research cut-off.
  • Price movement: the modest estimated edges can disappear if the market shortens.

Expected goals can help separate performance from the final score, but the metric requires tactical and game-state context. GoalIQAI’s guide to expected goals and its limitations explains why a single xG result should not dominate a forecast.

GoalIQAI Verdict

Bromley at 2.50 provide the strongest balance of price, repeatable home strengths and evidence that they can compete at League One level. Their opening victory was not dominant, but the expected-goals difference at Barnsley was much narrower than the possession and shot totals imply.

Barnsley at 3.25 are the clearest market disagreement. They lost their opener, but controlled most of the match and appear too far behind Doncaster in the available price. Huddersfield at 2.45 offer a more balanced secondary selection after winning with ten men and carrying a strong longer-term underlying baseline.

Oxford at 2.88 and Notts County at 4.75 provide plausible price-based opportunities, but managerial, squad and divisional uncertainty reduce confidence.

Overall classification: Limited Evidence Day.

Key Takeaways

  • Bromley at 2.50 are the best-supported selection after winning away and returning to their strong home environment.
  • Barnsley’s 3.25 price may place too much weight on their opening defeat and too little on their territorial control.
  • Huddersfield at 2.45 combine an encouraging opening result with strong longer-term performance indicators.
  • Oxford at 2.88 have a stronger squad baseline than Stevenage, but their new manager and transfer restrictions increase uncertainty.
  • Notts County at 4.75 are a higher-variance opportunity against a Luton side that conceded three times at Reading.
  • Leicester, Stockport and Luton are likely winners whose short prices do not offer clear value.
