Expected points in Fantasy Premier League estimate the average score a player would produce if the same fixture, role and playing-time conditions could be repeated many times. Usually shortened to xP, the projection weights every scoring route by its probability: minutes, goals, assists, clean sheets, saves, defensive contributions, bonus and deductions.
An xP figure is not a prediction of the player's exact score. A midfielder projected for 5.06 points may most often score two, while a smaller chance of a goal, assist and bonus creates a much higher ceiling and lifts the mean. Expected points are most useful when the assumptions and range of outcomes remain visible.
What Are Expected Points in Fantasy Premier League?
Expected FPL points are the probability-weighted average of all the scores a player could record over a defined period. In general form:
Expected points = Σ (probability of an outcome × FPL points from that outcome)
If a midfielder has a 30% chance of scoring and a goal is worth five points, the goal component contributes 1.50 expected points. The player will not receive 1.50 points for a goal in the actual match: they will normally receive either zero or five. The decimal is the long-run average implied by the estimate.
This is the distinction between a forecast and an outcome. FPL scores are discrete and volatile, while xP is an average used to compare uncertain choices consistently.
Official FPL Scoring Rules for 2026/27

Defenders qualify for defensive-contribution points through a combined total of clearances, blocks, interceptions and tackles. For midfielders and forwards, ball recoveries also count, but the threshold is 12. The award does not stack: reaching twice the threshold still earns two points, not four.
Clean-sheet points require at least 60 minutes, excluding stoppage time. A player substituted after that threshold keeps the clean sheet if the team concedes later. Official FPL assists are also governed by game-specific rules and do not map perfectly onto a data provider's expected-assists measure. How Expected FPL Points Are Calculated
A transparent model separates the scoring routes:
xP = appearance xP + goal xP + assist xP + clean-sheet xP + save xP + defensive-contribution xP + bonus xP − expected deductions
The components cannot always be estimated independently. Minutes affect almost every other route, while a goal or clean sheet can also improve a player's chance of bonus. A simulation is often preferable because it can represent these dependencies inside complete match scenarios.
Expected minutes and appearance points
Playing time comes first. A useful minutes projection distinguishes between not appearing, making a short appearance and reaching 60 minutes rather than relying only on one average. The probabilities may be informed by starts, substitution patterns, injuries, rest, competition for places and tactical fit.
For example, a player with a 10% chance of no appearance, a 10% chance of playing fewer than 60 minutes and an 80% chance of reaching 60 has expected appearance points of:

Goals and assists
A player's attacking projection should account for expected minutes, position, opposition, venue, team strength, penalties, set pieces and likely role. A simple goal component multiplies the projected number of goals by the points awarded for the player's FPL position. The assist component multiplies projected FPL assists by three.
Historical expected goals and expected assists are useful inputs, but they are not ready-made FPL projections. They require opponent and minutes adjustments, and conventional xA does not include every route to an official FPL assist.
Clean sheets and goals conceded
Team clean-sheet probability must be combined with the probability that the player qualifies for the award. In a simplified midfielder calculation, an 80% chance of reaching 60 minutes and a 40% team clean-sheet probability produce:
0.80 × 0.40 × 1 = 0.32 expected points
For a goalkeeper or defender, the same simplified inputs would produce 1.28 expected clean-sheet points. Their model must also include the stepwise deduction for every two goals conceded while the player is liable.
Saves and defensive contributions
Threshold scoring requires a probability distribution. A goalkeeper projected to make 3.2 saves does not automatically receive one expected save point. The model needs the probabilities of recording at least three, six, nine and further multiples of three saves.
The same principle applies to defensive contributions. A midfielder with a 25% probability of reaching the 12-action threshold receives 0.25 × 2 = 0.50 expected points from that route. Multiplying their average actions by a points rate would misrepresent the rule.
Bonus points
The Bonus Points System ranks players through actions supplied by Opta. The leading player receives three bonus points, second receives two and third receives one, subject to the official tie rules. A projection can weight each possible award:
Bonus xP = P(1 bonus) + 2 × P(2 bonus) + 3 × P(3 bonus)
Bonus is correlated with goals, assists, clean sheets and saves because those events also influence the underlying BPS ranking. Adding a player's average bonus to separately projected returns without adjusting for this relationship can double-count favourable performances.
Deductions
Cards, own goals, missed penalties and goals conceded are low-frequency but material outcomes. Each deduction should be weighted by its probability. A robust model also avoids double-counting a red card and an included yellow-card deduction when the scenarios are not independent.
Complete Worked Expected-Points Example
Consider an illustrative midfielder in a single fixture. These are teaching assumptions, not a current player projection. The projected goals and assists have already been adjusted for the player's appearance and minutes probabilities.

The arithmetic is transparent, but the 5.06 total is only as reliable as the assumptions. A production model should generate complete, mutually consistent scorelines and player events. That prevents goals and bonus from being treated as unrelated, keeps clean sheets conditional on minutes, and ensures the attacking inputs are not accidentally adjusted for playing time twice.
Mean Projection, Modal Score and Ceiling
Three different summaries answer three different questions:
- Mean projection: the probability-weighted average across all possible scores. The worked player has a mean of 5.06.
- Modal score: the single score with the highest probability. For many attacking players this may be two appearance points, even when their mean is above five.
- Ceiling: the high end of a plausible range, usually created by multiple returns and bonus. It is not the player's maximum mathematically possible score and should be tied to a stated probability or percentile.
A small probability of a double-digit haul can pull the mean above the modal outcome. That is why “projected for five” should never be read as “most likely to score five”. A comparison becomes more informative when it includes a blank probability, median or modal outcome and an upper percentile alongside mean xP.
The distinction is particularly useful for FPL captaincy decisions. Doubling the captain's score doubles the expected return and the consequences of each outcome; it does not make the forecast more certain.

Compare players over the correct horizon
A one-Gameweek projection may favour the strongest immediate fixture, while a four- or six-Gameweek total may favour secure minutes and a better sequence of matchups. - Provider mismatch: xG, xA and event definitions vary, while official FPL assists follow their own rules.
- Threshold error: average saves or defensive actions do not reveal the probability of crossing a scoring threshold.
- Correlation: goals, assists, clean sheets, bonus and match state influence one another. Naively adding independent averages can distort both mean and ceiling.
- Player correlation: projections within the same team are connected. A team clean sheet benefits several assets together, while one player's assist may accompany another player's goal.
- Small samples: recent finishing, bonus or defensive-contribution rates may be noisy and role-dependent.
- False precision: displaying 5.06 does not mean the assumptions are accurate to two decimal places.
