On those assumptions, the midfield upgrade uses the additional budget more efficiently. However, the premium forward may still be preferable if they provide the strongest captaincy option.
This is why FPL value should be evaluated across the complete squad rather than through isolated player rankings.
Estimate a Replacement Level for Each Position
Replacement level is the expected output available from a reasonably priced alternative at the same position.
The baseline should not necessarily be the cheapest player in the game. A non-playing £4.0 million defender is not a meaningful alternative to a reliable starter.
A practical replacement player should:
- Be affordable within realistic squad structures.
- Have a credible route to regular minutes.
- Produce a usable level of expected points.
- Be available without creating a major club or position constraint.
