How to Compare FPL Players Properly

To compare FPL players properly, start with expected points over a defined period, then test the assumptions behind the projection: expected minutes, role, fixtures and routes to points. The best player in isolation is not always the best FPL decision. The 60-minute probability deserves particular attention. Under the official 2026/27 FPL scoring rules, players receive two appearance points for playing at least 60 minutes, while goalkeepers and defenders also need to reach that threshold to earn clean-sheet points. Two defenders with similar average minutes can therefore have different values if one regularly crosses 60 minutes and the other is often withdrawn just before it.

3. Compare role and routes to points

Do not compare all players through the same statistics. Identify how each player can actually score FPL points.

Position changes the reward for the same football event. In 2026/27, a goal is worth six FPL points to a defender, five to a midfielder and four to a forward. The rules also award two points when defenders reach 10 qualifying defensive contributions, or midfielders and forwards reach 12 under their broader measure. Those thresholds mean that a centre-back or defensive midfielder may have a steadier low-level scoring route than an attacking-only comparison suggests.

The Bonus Points System also changed for 2026/27. The Premier League says it reduced some overlap between defensive-contribution and bonus scoring while improving the bonus prospects of several other player types. Historical bonus rates should therefore be adjusted when the scoring system or a player's role changes rather than copied forward mechanically.

4. Turn fixtures into player-specific projections

An easy fixture is not equally easy for every FPL asset. Separate the opponent's likely effect on:

  • team goals;

A deep-defending opponent may increase possession and crossing opportunities for a full-back while reducing transition space for a winger. 5. Calculate expected points and retain the range

Combine the relevant scoring events into an expected-points estimate. A simplified projection can be written as:

Expected FPL points = appearance points + expected goal points + expected assist points + expected clean-sheet points + expected defensive-contribution points + expected bonus points − expected deductions.

Keep an uncertainty range alongside the mean. A projection of 6.1 points is not meaningfully exact if uncertain team news could move it between 4.8 and 7.0. A narrow difference between players should be treated as a close call when the uncertainty around each projection is much larger than the gap.

6. Adjust for price and opportunity cost

Price should be assessed after projected points, not instead of them. Points per million can be a useful screen, but it does not show what the money can actually buy or whether the cheaper player's squad place is above replacement level.

Compare the complete routes:

Route value = selected player's expected points + expected improvement funded elsewhere.

If Player B costs £2.0m less than Player A, identify a realistic use for that £2.0m. If the money would remain unused in the bank, its immediate points value may be zero. If it upgrades a weak defender, enables a better captain or removes a non-playing substitute, it may be worth more than the gap between A and B.

7. Add captaincy and squad flexibility

Captaincy can justify paying for a premium asset whose ordinary value appears modest. Because the captain's score is doubled, the relevant addition is the player's expected advantage over the captain you would otherwise choose—not the full projection again.

For example, if Player A projects for 7.5 points in a Gameweek and the alternative captain projects for 6.0, captaining A adds an estimated 1.5 points to the route relative to captaining the alternative. If A will not realistically receive the armband, that premium captaincy value should not be credited.

Also consider flexibility. A player can occupy a valuable club slot, lock money into an awkward price point or require two transfers to restructure later. These costs are difficult to express precisely, but they should be recorded rather than ignored.

8. Use ownership to understand rank consequences

Ownership does not change a player's expected points. It changes how the player's score affects a manager's rank.

A highly owned player can create a large downside when omitted, while a low-owned player creates more upside if he outscores the popular alternative. That may matter in a short mini-league chase or near the end of the season, but it should not turn an inferior projection into a superior one automatically.

Use ownership after the football and FPL analysis. Label the choice clearly if you accept lower expected points in exchange for a more aggressive rank profile.

In isolation, Player A leads by 3.2 expected points:

25.8 − 22.6 = 3.2 points

Player B saves £2.0m. Suppose that money funds a defender upgrade projected to add 4.2 points across the same four Gameweeks. The two routes become:

The cheaper route now leads by 1.0 expected point. That is not a large enough gap to justify certainty, particularly because the ranges overlap substantially.

Captaincy may change the result. In one Gameweek, suppose Player A projects for 7.5 points and the best captain available on the Player B route projects for 6.0. Captaining Player A creates an additional 1.5 expected points relative to the alternative captain:

7.5 − 6.0 = 1.5 points

After that adjustment, the Player A route rises to 27.3 relevant expected points and leads the Player B route by 0.5. The conclusion is not that Player A is universally better. It is that Player A becomes marginally preferable for a squad that will captain him, while Player B may remain preferable for a squad with an equally strong captain and a valuable use for the £2.0m.

The ownership difference changes the volatility of rank outcomes but not these expected-point calculations. Omitting Player A carries greater rank risk if he returns heavily; selecting Player B creates more upside if the cheaper route outscores the popular one.

How to Use Bookmaker-Implied Probabilities Carefully

Market prices can help estimate team scoring, clean-sheet and player-return probabilities, but raw odds are not forecasts ready to paste into an FPL model.

First remove bookmaker margin where possible. Then make sure the market matches the FPL event being modelled. Letting the latest Gameweek dominate

Using one generic fixture rating

Treating points per million as the final answer

Cheap bench players often look efficient because the denominator is small, while premium captains can look inefficient despite offering scarce high-ceiling projections. Compare marginal points and the actual alternative use of funds.

Adding captaincy value when the player will not be captained

A premium player's theoretical captaincy appeal has no value to a squad that will consistently captain someone else. Credit only realistic armband decisions.

Letting ownership override the projection

Ignoring transfer costs
